Back Up Your Files!
If you think this is a boring subject, you are right! So to help you get your interest, imagine you are 90 percent through a 2 day design project and suddenly you find all your work has become unusable to you. Now the subject is not so boring. Here are a few tips to help you spend more time with your family and friends and less time sitting in front of your computer.
Richs rules for backups
- Backups should be automatic every 24 hours.
- Your daily back up files must be on a different physical hardrive or computer.
- Do not convert the backup from the native file, I mean do not compress the file or allow it to be converted to a file only a proprietary program can open up. You need to be able to open your backup as you would your native file.
- If the project spans more than one day or even an hour, do a file save as, project.name.day.month.year.ver.ext This should be filed within the working folder under a folder called BACK.
- You cannot make too many backups.
This kind of backup will give you a layered backup. If you only follow step 1, and your file becomes corrupt with out your knowledge, then 24 hours later you will have 2 corrupt files.
